First global medal for Mujinga Kambundji

World Indoor Champs Birmingham

At the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast soared to an emphatic 60m victory in a world-leading 6.97. Ahoure’s Ivorian compatriot Marie-Josee Ta Lou finished second in a lifetime best of 7.05. Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji took bronze in 7.05, just five thousandths behind Ta Lou and the fastest ever time for bronze at the World Indoor Championships.

It was Kambundji’s first global medal (and the first for Switzerland in sprint), having earned European 100m bronze in 2016. “I am happy, this is amazing, to win a medal in a field that was so fast,” said the WINFORCE athlete, who was competing at her first World Indoor Championships. “My career has not always been easy but I am happy it has turned out so well.”
